Nelson Mandela, rais wa kwanza wa Afrika Kusini kuchaguliwa kidemokrasia na Mshindi wa Tuzo ya Amani ya Nobel, , amefariki Desemba 5, 2013 akiwa na umri wa miaka 95. Mandela alitumikia kifungo kwa miaka 27 kwa sababu ya mapambano yake dhidi ya mfumo wa kibaguzi wa Afrika Kusini unaofahamika kama  Ukaburu. Aliachiwa huru kutoka gerezani mwaka 1990, na kuwa rais miaka minne baadae, na kuachia madaraka baada ya kutumikia kwa kipindi kimoja tu, kitendo adimu kufanywa na wenye madaraka barani Afrika.

Akiwa mtu anayependwa duniani kote, Mandela alkuwa na namna ya mvuto katika maneno yake. Moja ya nukuu zake inatoka katika hotuba yake ya kijeuri aliyoitoa mahakamani wakati wa Kesi maarufu ya Uhaini ya Rivonia mwaka 1964, ambapo alisema

Nimepigana dhidi ya mfumo wa utawala unaowapendelea makaburu, na nimepigana dhidi ya mfumo wa utawala unaowapendela weusi. Nimekuwa na ndoto ya jamii ya kidemokrasia na huru ambayo watu wote wanaishi pamoja kwa mshikamano na fursa sawa. Ni ndoto ambayo nataraji kuiishi na kuitimiza. Lakini, kama itahitajika, hiyo ni ndoto ambayo nimejiandaa kupoteza maisha yangu kwa ajili yake.


Ukiacha hotuba hiyo ya kesi yake ya Rivonia, Mandela anaacha nyuma yake nukuu nyingi za kukumbukwa zenye busara alizozitoa katika kipindi chake chote cha uhai wake. Pamoja na kutuacha, anaendelea kuzungumza na ulimwengu kupitia watumiaji wa twita, ambao waliitikia habari za kifo chake kwa kusambaza maneno yake.
